Torá, José Luis
Born in Madrid in 1966. Music studies at the Real Conservatorio de Música, Madrid; composition, among others, by Mauricio Sotelo.
Attends numerous courses and seminars taught by composers such as: Luis de Pablo, Emmanuel Nunes, Salvatore Sciarrino, Brian Ferneyhough, Gerard Grisey, Tristan Murail, etc.; also participates in the Internationale Ferienkurse Darmstadt.
In 1994, was selected by Brian Ferneyhough to receive the scholarship-order granted by the CDMC and the University of Alcala de Henares. That same year he was selected for the SGAE Composition Contest.
In 1995 he moved to Stuttgart, scholarship by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, to pursue postgraduate studies in composition with Helmut Lachenmann at the Musikhochschule; graduated in 1998; simultaneously working in the laboratory of electronic music with Reiner Wehinger.
In 1998 he moved to Freiburg im Breisgau, as a fellow composer by the Heinrich Strobel Foundation, and attended until 1999 the composition seminars of Mathias Spahlinger.
His works have been performed at and commissioned by festivals such as: Wittener Tage für neue Kammermusik (Witten), Tage für neue Musik (Zürich), Festival Smash (Salamanca), ISCM World Music Days, Bludenzer Tage zeitgemässer Musik (Austria), Ultima Festival (Oslo), Sound Festival (Aberdeen), Internationale Ferienkurse (Darmstadt), Contempuls (Prague), Musiikin aika (Finland), IRTIJAL (Beirut), Festival Internacional de Alicante, Ensems, Foro de Nueva Música Ciudad de México, Musik im XX. Jahrhundert Saarbrücken (Germany), etc.; and in cities like Paris, Berlin, Frankfurt, Cologne, Geneva, Graz, Madrid, Barcelona, among others; by groups such as: ensemble recherche, Ensemble Contrechamps, Trio Accanto, SMASH Ensemble, Remix Ensemble, NEXEnsemble, Ensemble Cattrall, Trio Nexus, etc, and soloists such as: Teodoro Anzellotti, Eric-Maria Couturier, Mats Scheidegger, Bertrand Chavarria, Richard Craig, Sisco Aparici, etc. Of his works have been made recordings and productions for RNE, WDR, SR, ORF, DRS2, YLE, etc.
He has taught courses, lectures and seminars in Spain, Germany, Austria and Switzerland.
He was visiting professor of composition at the College of Music in Catalonia (ESMuC, Barcelona) during the 2004-2005 academic year.
He currently lives in Madrid.
